Presidential Inaugural Committee
National Day of Service
Daily Dose of Reading is holding a book drive on Saturday January 19, 2013 in conjunction with the Presidential Inaugural Committee National Day of Service. Donations of new or gently used books for children of all ages will be accepted.
Donations will be collected at the Daily Dose of Reading offices between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 12:00 (noon). The offices are located at 2054 South Green Road, South Euclid, Ohio; in the offices of Sender’s Pediatrics.
Donated books will be distributed to children and families that participate in Daily Dose of Reading programs.
The mission of Daily Dose of Reading is to increase literacy in children by empowering families through reading and language. Daily Dose of Reading programming increases literacy by encouraging families with children to read together.
The Prescription to Read program is utilized by participating pediatricians in Northeast Ohio. The patients of the doctors are given a prescription to read as part of their well-child visit. The participating offices have books available to families in their waiting rooms; instead of a television.
Daily Dose of Reading Play and Learn programs expose young children and their parents to literature and activities tied to the theme of the stories. These fun programs for children also encourage and support parents. Parents learn techniques to engage their children and to help in their language development.“Talk, Sing, Read, Play –Every Child, Every Family, Every Day!” is the mantra of these programs.
The Presidential Inaugural Committee National Day of Service is a tradition started four years ago by President Obama and his family. To honor the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the first family is asking Americans to find an event and serve with others in their community. In addition to the Daily Dose of Reading Book Drive, information can be found about other volunteer opportunities on the Committee website www.pic2013.org
