When will it become apparent?
The other day I was speaking with a friend about pre-literacy skills. “When” she asked “will it become apparent that a young child is ready to read?” Our conversation finished without answering that rhetorical question.
Since then I have given the matter some thought. I’ve decided that children are ready to read very early in life. Much like many other activities in life, children want to do the things they see other people do. Children want to drive the car, they want to operate the bulldozer, they want to play ball and they want to read. For some activities it is much better if children wait until they grow older to tackle some of life’s challenges. Besides, they cannot reach the peddles until they grow big enough….
Reading on the other hand is something children can do the day they are born.
